Long before roads crossed the Caprock, the prairies of West Texas were alive with great herds of buffalo. According to John Miller Morris in El Llano Estacado, Native people camped in Blanco Canyon, where water, shelter, and abundant wildlife made it a place of remarkable beauty. Hunters would climb to the top of the Caprock to follow the buffalo across the open prairie, returning to the canyon each evening.
